Packaging After Plastic: Trend Brief and Client Retention Plan
Perftech laser-perforates packaging film for food companies. Food packaging is moving away from conventional plastic, and its clients will have to redesign their packs. I researched what is driving the shift and built a brief on how Perftech can keep its clients through that redesign.
Regulators
New state packaging fees, the EU's packaging rules in full effect from August 2026, and California's limits on "recyclable" claims.
Consumers
Worry about microplastics is now framed as a health issue, but most people don't feel well informed about it.
Brands
Most large food and consumer brands plan to cut plastic, and some will pay more to do it.
What I found
- New compostable and bio-based films still need controlled gas exchange to keep produce fresh, which is exactly what perforation does
- Perftech's food-safety record and tool-free laser process carry over to new materials
- The real risk is perception: buyers may assume Perftech only works with plastic
What I recommended
- Position Perftech as a partner for any material, not a plastic supplier
- Trial new films, publish data sheets and short case studies as proof
- Offer clients a free readiness review before they re-bid their packaging
- Co-develop with film makers, the way competitors already do
The 90-day plan I proposed
Map top clients and their materials. Hold review calls with the top five. Pick three new films to trial.
Run perforation trials and record oxygen, moisture and shelf-life results. Draft a data sheet for each film.
Launch the readiness review offer. Publish a case study. Reach out to two film suppliers.
